This is my first blog about Covid, and was a letter for the Guardian. There is a lot of talk about how the reported cases of deaths among those in care have been excessive. The writers seem to think that it is a basic vulnerability among such a predominantly elderly population, but that is only part of the story.

My son is 54 years old and has been disabled with a learning disability since he was born. He has been supported through state provided disability benefits throughout his life because there is no possibility of him being able to undertake a wage-earning job.

The fashionable view of marriage is that it is declining, archaic and no longer necessary. This is wide of the mark. It is not just that weddings are on the increase – partly a result of more second marriages; it is that being old fashioned is no bad thing, if the institution is tried and tested.
